Studies among patient populations focus on using artificial intelligence to identify who is at risk of Alzheimer's dementia, intervening early in people with dementia diagnoses and testing interventions to increase resilience. Other studies aim to help patients and their healthcare professionals understand and manage functional neurological illnesses. As part of her research that focuses on healthcare professionals, Dr. Stonnington tests interventions to reduce burnout, foster peer support and authentic connections, and increase professional fulfillment and engagement.

Significance to patient care

To be most effective, treatment should begin before a patient with dementia loses function. Yet a diagnosis of dementia doesn't occur until a patient's ability to function has already declined. The work of Dr. Stonnington and her colleagues aims to find patients at imminent risk of decline and maximize brain health, as well as reinforce proven strategies that preserve the ability to function, even with disease.

Dr. Stonnington's research also focuses on enabling healthcare professionals to deliver on the promise of high-quality, compassionate care. This includes building supportive relationships and using technology in support of a healing work environment.
